Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen, and close to the Yucatan Channel. It is one of the nine municipalities of the state of Quintana Roo.
Cozumel is a flat island based on limestone, resulting in a karst topography. Due to its geology, there are many cenotes in Cozume. Mainland cenotes can be explored by snorkeling, swimming or diving, and are home to several freshwater species.
